Interview Reflections and Future Thoughts

I had an interview recently—well, actually a couple. The first was a phone interview with a company called Jable for a position titled Server Repair Technician. The role falls under their diagnostics team, focusing on hardware assessment and repairs. The call went well enough that they invited me for an on-site interview.

Initially, I had applied for what turned out to be a Level 2 position, but since I don’t yet have hands-on experience, I didn’t qualify. Still, because of my schooling and personal projects, they wanted to see if I might be a fit for a Level 1 role instead. That’s what the follow-up interview was for.

The day after the phone interview, I had court—which went okay—and then the next day (Thursday), I had the on-site interview. Overall, I felt good about it. The original person scheduled to interview me wasn’t available, so I ended up speaking with someone else—maybe a team lead instead of the supervisor—but regardless of his title, we had a good conversation. It flowed naturally on a personal level.

The only thing I’m unsure about is whether my knowledge base was strong enough. He said he’d pass my interview along to the main guy, who would make the final decision. I was hoping to hear back before the weekend, but I didn’t. So now I’m just hoping to hear something on Monday.

During the interview process, I met a 19-year-old who impressed me. He had a ton of certifications, solid experience, and was interviewing for a Level 3 position—the same role but at a higher tier than I was aiming for. I won’t lie, I felt a bit envious at first. But our talk shifted my perspective and sparked a few new ideas. I ended up connecting with him on LinkedIn so we could stay in touch.

Since then, I’ve been a little nervous, just waiting to hear back. Still, regardless of the outcome, the experience has already been valuable. It gave me insight into what I need to work on and how to do better next time.

I’ve also been debating whether to switch my certification focus. I had been studying for Network+, but started wondering if I should switch to A+ since it might help me land a job more quickly. But tonight, while driving for Uber, I picked up a passenger who told me about her husband. He’s a tech guy who decided to switch careers, went back to school, and now works from home—and loves it. She admitted she was jealous. That conversation reminded me that I can do this too.

So for now, I think I’ll stick to the path I’m on. I’ll keep going until I’m sure a change is needed. I’ve also been toying with the idea of starting something on my own—maybe a small, independent business where I help people set up or fix their networks. Start small with homes, churches, maybe local companies—charge affordable prices and grow from there.

Just some thoughts I’ve been mulling over, and I wanted to capture them while they were fresh.
